Mandates the 40 percent reduction of the polluting coolant in the coming four years.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its final rule last week mandating the reduction of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) use by 40 percent in the next four years.
HFCs are a type of gas commonly used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and some aerosol products. These gases are also reportedly significantly more polluting than carbon dioxide emissions of the same size. This final rule builds on a previous rule passed in 2022, mandating a 10 percent reduction in HFC use within one year.
“The U.S. HFC phasedown program, bolstered by domestic innovation to develop alternative chemicals and equipment, is paving the way for the United States to tackle climate change and strengthen global competitiveness,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator Joe Goffman of the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.
